Friends of The Gambia Association

A UK based charity sponsoring childrens' Education, Building Schools and small Medical facilities, in The Gambia. The Friends of The Gambia Association was formed by a group of people who had visited The Gambia in 1990. It became a UK Registered Charity in 1995 and in 2000 obtained NGO (Non Governmental Organisation) status in The Gambia.

Audrey Arnold was a dedicated supporter of FoTGA for many years and helped fund the education of numerous children. She returned to The Gambia in her later life to meet these children and witnessed first hand the positive work that was being achieved.

Cataracts Are Curable – The Gambian Project

A UK based charity that was formed in 2019 by the same couple who previously ran the FOTGA education sponsorship scheme for six years. It specifically provides eye care to the poor of The Gambia and, since formation, has paid for 1,454 cataract operations and donated a wide range of ophthalmic equipment to the National Eye Health Programme.

The Directors of Cataracts Are Curable, Violet & Jim - plus their supporters, have raised over £100,000 since 2019. They take no salary and also fund their own trips to The Gambia including all expenses. This lean approach has enabled 96% of all donations to be utilised directly on cataract operations, eye health surveys and equipment spares.

We hope you have enjoyed viewing the Arnold family slides and cine film showing their experiences in The Gambia as they helped play their small part in the progress towards its Independence. We continue to support Cataracts Are Curable in memory of Audrey and Ray, and we would be humbled to learn of any donations sent via the link below which loads their donation page at https://cataractsarecurable.org.
